Carin will focus on teaching you how to create a bezel that is not only a good plumb fit around the stone, but also how to accurately measure and create a seat leaving just enough metal to cover the stone and set it tightly. Once the bezel is created, you will have the freedom to explore different ideas to decorate the side. Carin will provide a variety of castings to choose from, but don't feel obligated to use only these.  Feel free to saw out shapes, texture your bezel with granulation, explore handwritten options, even look to set smaller stones along the side wall. Carin will help you bring your design to life and give tips and tricks along the way!  Once your bezel is decorated, you can add a ring shank or bail if you prefer a necklace. Lastly, we'll explore ways to ensure good clean finishing and patina and how to set a thick walled bezel! Phew! That sounds like enough for 2 days!

THIS IS AN INTERMEDIATE - ADVANCED SKILLS CLASS. Students should already be proficient in sawing, filing, sanding and soldering. While there will be an instructor and 1 additional assistant (2 students to 1 teacher ratio!!!) this setting can be tricky, and knowledge of basic silversmithing skills are a must to ensure you successfully leave with a high quality, completed ring! Feel free to email Carin at carin@jonesingforjewelry.com if you have any questions.

Supplies:

All supplies including silver, high quality stones, and a small variety of castings to choose from, are included in the price of the workshop. If you have a stone you are interested in using, feel free to bring it and together we’ll discuss whether your stone would be a good fit for this particular design. If you wish to add a 3-4mm stone to your bezel wall, please bring that with you as well as they will not be provided. Carin will also provide additional castings at a discount for those who wish to purchase and take them home.

Tools:

The Seventh & Stone studio is equipped with all the necessary tools for this two day workshop. However if you have any favorites tools from your own studio, feel free to bring them along! Please ensure you have them labeled so they don't get mixed up with the class supplies. Also, extra tools of the following would be welcomed so we can move along at a more even pace:

  • #0 and #2 files

  • Miter vise

  • Calipers

  • Parallel Pliers

  • 1/2 round pliers

Cancelation Policy :

Payments are due in full at the time of registration. Cancelations can be made within 30 days (May 16th deadline) of the workshop for a full refund minus a $15 restocking fee. Cancelations made 30-7 days prior to class will be refunded minus a $100 + $15 restocking fee. Cancelations made 7 days or less of the class will be refunded only half the price of the class + a $15 restocking fee.

Lodging :

Two Harbors, MN is a quaint tourist town located on the north shore of Lake Superior, just 20 minutes north of Duluth. Traffic on Hwy 61 will start to get busy this time of year, so if you decide to stay along the shore, be sure to allow a little extra travel time.

Here is a list of places to stay for those of you that are traveling from out of town. I recommend booking early as lodging in this area fills up quick during the summer weekends.

Explore The Shore :

Two Harbors and the surrounding area is absolutely stunning this time of year. I suggest extending your trip beyond the weekend so you have a chance to take in the beauty of Lake Superior’s shoreline.

  • State parks along the shore - including Gooseberry Falls and Splitrock Lighthouse

  • Waterfalls

  • Day Tripper of Duluth - kayaking, hiking, canoeing, and biking tours!

  • Superior Hiking Trail - the main office is across the street from Seventh & Stone!

  • Canal Park - Duluth’s big tourist attraction. Watch ships go under the Aerial Lift Bridge, grab some lunch at Northern Waters Smokehaus, and pick up a souvenir at Duluth Pack. Be sure to walk Superior St. intersecting Lake Ave. Lots of shops, eateries, and galleries too.

  • Castle Danger Brewery - one of Two Harbors’ main attractions! Take a tour, enjoy a brew, order pizza delivery from Northshore Pizza Cafe, and play some games. You may even catch some live music!

  • Explore Two Harbors

  • Explore Duluth

Where to Eat :

Just a few of our favorites

Two Harbors

  • Vanilla Bean - across the street from Seventh & Stone… i love their Scandinavian breakfast

  • Northshore Pizza Cafe - also across the street. They serve pizza, coffee, baked goods, and ice cream too!

  • Carmody 61 - big menu and their fish tacos are delicious!

  • Cedar Coffee Company - locally roasted coffee and yummy light bites. The connected cycle shop offers bike rentals too!

  • Louise’s Place - old fashioned comfort food… be sure to get a cinnamon roll to go!

  • Judy’s Cafe - the town diner… great breakfast
